In Indian higher education, each semester is evaluated as an independent academic milestone. The SGPA reflects the ratio of total quality points earned across all registered subjects in that specific term to the total credit hours registered.

SGPA (S_i) = Σ(C_i × G_i) ÷ ΣC_i

Where Ci is the credits of course i, and Gi is the grade point earned.

Ci = Number of credits assigned to the i-th course in that semester.
Gi = Grade point secured by the student in the i-th course (0 to 10).

How SGPA Impacts Final Cumulative CGPA

Your cumulative degree grade (CGPA) is not a simple arithmetic average of your semester SGPAs unless every semester had an identical credit total. Instead, your degree CGPA is calculated as a credit-weighted composite:

Cumulative CGPA = Σ(SGPAj × Semester Creditsj) ÷ Σ(Semester Creditsj)
