Methodology

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) reflects your aggregate academic performance over multiple terms or years of study. In modern university credit systems (such as the Choice Based Credit System - CBCS), CGPA weights each semester based on registered credit hours rather than treating all terms equally.

Cumulative CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (Semester SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ (Total Completed Credits)

Worked Example

  • Semester 1: 8.20 SGPA with 20 Credits → 8.20 × 20 = 164.0 Points
  • Semester 2: 8.60 SGPA with 22 Credits → 8.60 × 22 = 189.2 Points
  • Semester 3: 9.00 SGPA with 20 Credits → 9.00 × 20 = 180.0 Points
Total Weighted Points = 164.0 + 189.2 + 180.0 = 533.2
Total Credits = 20 + 22 + 20 = 62
Cumulative CGPA = 533.2 ÷ 62 = 8.60
Equivalent Percentage = 8.60 × 9.5 = 81.70%

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Google search questions regarding multi-semester CGPA calculations, credit weighting, and 4.0 conversions.

Multiply each semester GPA by the credits completed during that semester. Add the results and divide by the total credits across all semesters.

Formula:
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Cumulative Credits

No. GPA commonly refers to one academic term, while CGPA usually represents overall performance across multiple semesters. You can calculate single-term academic performance using our GPA Calculator.

A simple proportional estimate is:

4.0 GPA = CGPA ÷ 10 × 4

For example, 8.0 CGPA is approximately 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (8.0 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.2). This is only an estimate and may not match an institution's official conversion. Official credential evaluators (such as WES or ECE) typically perform course-by-course evaluations. Explore global conversions on our International Grade Converter.
