Methodology
Professors typically organize course evaluations into categories with designated syllabus weights (e.g. Midterm 30%, Final 40%, Homework 15%, Participation 15%). The weighted average ensures each assessment influences your final grade strictly according to the syllabus breakdown.
Weighted Average Formula
Weighted Grade = Σ (Category Score × Category Weight) ÷ Σ (Total Category Weights)
Worked Example
- Homework Category (95% average, 25% weight) → 95 × 0.25 = 23.75%
- Midterm Exam (82% average, 30% weight) → 82 × 0.30 = 24.60%
- Lab Practical (90% average, 20% weight) → 90 × 0.20 = 18.00%
- Final Exam (88% average, 25% weight) → 88 × 0.25 = 22.00%
Final Weighted Course Grade = 23.75 + 24.60 + 18.00 + 22.00 = 88.35% (Grade B+)
