Methodology: The Modified Bavarian Formula

German higher education institutions and the central evaluation office uni-assist convert foreign qualifications using the standardized "Modified Bavarian Formula" approved by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz - KMK).

Bavarian Formula

German Grade = 1 + 3 × [(Nmax - Nd) ÷ (Nmax - Nmin)]
  • Nmax = Highest possible grade in the foreign grading scale (e.g. 4.0 for US, 10.0 for India, 100 for percentages)
  • Nmin = Minimum passing grade in the foreign grading scale (e.g. 2.0 for US, 4.0 for India, 50 for percentages)
  • Nd = Your obtained grade point average or overall percentage mark
