Methodology
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is the weighted average of grade points earned in all courses registered during a single semester. Course credits serve as the weighting factor: practical labs, theory courses, and research electives each contribute in proportion to their credit allocation.
SGPA Formula (UGC CBCS Guidelines)
Where Ci = credits of the ith course, Gi = grade point awarded in the ith course.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SGPA and how is it calculated?↓
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your academic performance during one specific semester. Multiply each course’s credit hours by the grade point awarded, sum them up, and divide by the total registered semester credits.
How do you convert SGPA to percentage?↓
For a 10-point SGPA under UGC and AICTE guidelines, Percentage = (SGPA - 0.75) × 10 or SGPA × 9.5 depending on your university regulations (e.g. VTU uses [SGPA - 0.75] × 10, whereas CBSE/UGC uses × 9.5).
What is a good SGPA in engineering or university?↓
An SGPA of 8.0 or above is typically considered First Class with Distinction, and 7.0–7.9 is considered First Class in most Indian and international universities.
