Calculation Methodology
Course grading structures generally follow one of two academic models: weighted percentage grading or points-based cumulative grading.
In a weighted grading system, each assessment category (such as Midterms, Homework, or Labs) is assigned a fixed percentage of the final course grade regardless of the number of individual questions. The calculator computes the weighted contribution of each task and normalizes the sum to represent your current standing out of 100%.
Mathematical Formula
Where Assignment Grade is represented as a percentage (e.g. 92%) and Assignment Weight is the proportion of the course syllabus (e.g. 25%).
Worked Example
Suppose a student has completed three syllabus components:
- Homework: 95% score with a 20% weight (95 × 20 = 1,900 points)
- Midterm Exam: 84% score with a 30% weight (84 × 30 = 2,520 points)
- Class Project: 90% score with a 25% weight (90 × 25 = 2,250 points)
Total completed weight = 20% + 30% + 25% = 75%
Current Grade = 6,670 ÷ 75 = 88.93% (Grade B+)
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate your current course grade?↓
Multiply each graded assignment, quiz, project, or exam by its respective percentage weight. Sum these values, and divide by the total percentage weight completed so far. If your syllabus has 60% of work completed, dividing by 60 scales your standing to a 100% basis.
What is the formula for calculating weighted course grades?↓
Overall Grade = Σ(Assignment Score × Assignment Weight) ÷ Σ(Assignment Weights). For unweighted courses, it is simply the sum of points earned divided by total points possible.
What happens if syllabus weights do not total 100%?↓
Our calculator automatically handles partial-semester calculations. It normalizes your current score based on whatever percentage of the syllabus has been completed to date.
How do I convert my course percentage to a letter grade?↓
Standard collegiate cutoffs are: 93–100% (A / 4.0), 90–92% (A- / 3.7), 87–89% (B+ / 3.3), 83–86% (B / 3.0), 80–82% (B- / 2.7), 77–79% (C+ / 2.3), 73–76% (C / 2.0), 70–72% (C- / 1.7), 60–69% (D / 1.0), and below 60% (F / 0.0).
