Methodology

The Final Grade Calculator isolates the unknown variable in your course syllabus weighted average equation. By knowing your current pre-final standing and the percentage weight of your upcoming final exam, we can calculate the exact minimum exam score required to cross the threshold into your desired grade bracket.

Final Exam Target Formula

Required Final Grade = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight

Worked Example

Goal: Earn an A (90.0% course grade)

  • Current Pre-Final Grade: 88.0%
  • Final Exam Weight: 25% (0.25)
  • Term Work Contribution: 88.0% × (1 - 0.25) = 66.0 points
  • Remaining Points Needed: 90.0 - 66.0 = 24.0 points
Required Final Exam Score = 24.0 ÷ 0.25 = 96.0%

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the grade needed on a final exam?↓

Use the formula: Required Final Score = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Exam Weight))] ÷ Final Exam Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, your target is 90%, and the final is worth 20%, you need [90 - (85 × 0.80)] ÷ 0.20 = 110%.

What if the calculator says I need over 100% on the final?↓

If the score required exceeds 100%, achieving your desired grade is mathematically impossible based purely on standard scoring. You would need extra credit assignments, an exam curve, or bonus points.

Can this calculator handle points instead of percentages?↓

Yes! Convert your current points to a percentage (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible × 100), input your desired final percentage, and set the final exam’s percentage share of the course total.
